Semester 2:
During this semester I have worked on a few stories that I am proud of. Although this semester was a struggle for me as I looked at next steps in my academic career, I think of journalism as one of my most interesting classes. I plan on taking a journalism class at Fort Lewis College next year as I attend. This semester in journalism I learned a lot about writing stories that you are not particularly excited about, but finding an edge that you can find interesting. I also learned a lot about working with peers on stories and the many ways that journalism can appear.
Animas Quill/ My Work:
Semester 1:
Reflection Brief:
Animas High School Junior Rio Edmondson spent the first semester of her junior year hard at work at the Animas Quill, despite the deep challenges the 2021 school year would bring. As the adjustment period between online school and in person learning came to a headway, Rio expressed feeling frustrated and losing motivation. “ I feel as if I have forgotten how to be a student.” She claimed. However, there is one area in which she feels she has continued to do well. “Journalism has proven to be a challenge, but one I feel I handled well. I am very proud of my published stories and work to become proficient in a new writing style.” Over the course of the semester Rio wrote 3 articles that would go on to be published in the Animas Quill, something she is very proud of.
This work is completely new to her, and has given her “an opportunity to try and learn something completely new.” She goes on to say, “ I feel I have learned to write concisely, and to grab my readers attention. I have struggled with active voice writing in the past, but pushed forward to get better at it this semester.”
Moving forward, Rio dreams of becoming more involved and active with Journalism class. “Journalism is something I am seriously considering studying in college, and a field I want to be in in the future. I hope that throughout this year I can work harder to prove that I am interested, and possibly become an editor my senior year.” She feels drawn to the subject, and is excited for the future opportunities this class may bring.
